Submissions due by Friday, May 31st
Dear Faculty,
Each year, the Elicker-Keegan Awards Committee invites all members of the Newton North community—teachers, parents, and especially students—to submit written nominations for a faculty member who deserves recognition for excellence. As we celebrate the end of the 2012-2013 school year, two teachers will be recognized at the luncheon on June 26th with the following awards:
The Paul E. Elicker Award for Excellence
This award seeks to recognize a teacher who has a deep appreciation and knowledge of subject matter, who stretches the minds of students, and whose standards for performance inspire excellence.
The Brenda Keegan Award for Excellence
This award recognizes an educator who inspires students to think, both critically and creatively; who combines an extensive knowledge of an academic discipline with warm personal engagement with students; and who helps students consider the significance of their studies to their own lives.
Please take a moment in the next two weeks to discuss these awards with your students. Seniors, especially, might be asked to reflect on their experiences at Newton North and to nominate a teacher who has “inspired excellence” or who has “really taught them how to think.”
Nominations are due by May 31st, turned in to Janice Miller's mailbox in the Main Office or emailed directly to us. We would be happy to answer any questions you might have about the awards. We would also be available during A, B, D, F, or G blocks to visit briefly with your classes. Although time is short, we hope you will take a moment to share this nomination process with your students.

The World Health Organization deemed 2011-2020 the Decade of Action for Road Safety, and noted that road traffic injuries are one of the top three leading causes of death for ages 5-44 in developing countries. In 2004, road traffic injuries resulted in more than 1.27 million deaths, which is almost equal to the number of deaths caused by HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined.
