Submissions due by Friday, May 31st

Dear Faculty,

Each year, the Elicker-Keegan Awards Committee invites all members of the Newton North community—teachers, parents, and especially students—to submit written nominations for a faculty member who deserves recognition for excellence. As we celebrate the end of the 2012-2013 school year, two teachers will be recognized at the luncheon on June 26th with the following awards:

The Paul E. Elicker Award for Excellence
This award seeks to recognize a teacher who has a deep appreciation and knowledge of subject matter, who stretches the minds of students, and whose standards for performance inspire excellence.

The Brenda Keegan Award for Excellence
This award recognizes an educator who inspires students to think, both critically and creatively; who combines an extensive knowledge of an academic discipline with warm personal engagement with students; and who helps students consider the significance of their studies to their own lives.

Please take a moment in the next two weeks to discuss these awards with your students. Seniors, especially, might be asked to reflect on their experiences at Newton North and to nominate a teacher who has “inspired excellence” or who has “really taught them how to think.”

Nominations are due by May 31st, turned in to Janice Miller's mailbox in the Main Office or emailed directly to us. We would be happy to answer any questions you might have about the awards. We would also be available during A, B, D, F, or G blocks to visit briefly with your classes. Although time is short, we hope you will take a moment to share this nomination process with your students.

Educational Excellence (EdEx) 2013 Launch Party

You are invited!

Educational Excellence CampaignThe Newton North Green Campus Project is the ED EX 2013 Campaign.  Each year, Principal Jennifer Price and Newton North faculty identify the Campaign’s target projects, with the goal of creating up-to-date, diverse and stimulating curriculum and environment for every student at North. See some examples of Greengineering projects students have participated in HERE.

DATE: Tuesday, May 21st
TIME7-8:30 p.m.
PLACE: Greengineering Lab (GNRG) at Newton North (by the Theater entrance off Elm St.)
FEATURED FOOD: Think green! We will provide crudites (all green, of course), a green beverage (mint...?), and chocolate dirt cupcakes (with yummy gummy worms).

Greengineering teacher Steve Chinosi will talk about this year's projects.  Students will also lead tours of the proposed spaces which will provide opportunities to apply learning and skills to the environment.  Find out about the following:

Outdoor Classroom, a dynamic classroom, unique green learning lab, and safe gathering place for students and faculty,
Organic Gardening Project, a greenhouse, composting area, and indigenous plants, all of which will show the benefits of sustainable gardening techniques, and
Green Wall Demonstration project, a vertical planned vegetable garden and ornamental moss to promote sustainability, earth science and health.

Our goal is to raise $25,000 for the Green Campus Project from the Newton North community.  Families can send a contribution of any size to Newton North or pay online via the website http://edex.northptso.org.

NNHS InvenTeamThe World Health Organization deemed 2011-2020 the Decade of Action for Road Safety, and noted that road traffic injuries are one of the top three leading causes of death for ages 5-44 in developing countries. In 2004, road traffic injuries resulted in more than 1.27 million deaths, which is almost equal to the number of deaths caused by HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined.

Recently, Winnie, the Communications Leader, gave a speech at Natick High School concerning how we, the NNHS InvenTeam, are dealing with this issue. Please watch the video to get a sense of the urgency of this Decade of Action.

To create awareness, we would like this message to go viral. After you watch the video, please spread the word by forwarding this message to as many of your family, friends, and associates: http://nnhsinventeam.com/

Each time someone watches the video, we have a better chance of creating awareness around the world.

Educational Excellence Campaign

The Educational Excellence Campaign is pleased and excited to present this year's project: the Newton North High School Green Campus.

The Green Campus focus will bring learning beyond the classroom walls, and into the green spaces around the campus. Newton North has pioneered many programs that take learning beyond the classroom. The Green Campus Project, which will benefit any class that wants a unique setting and approach, is a collaboration between the Biology, Greenengineering, and Carpentry Departments.

Please help us reach our Educational Excellence goal of $25,000 for this year's project. Please look for the Ed Ex brochures in the mail today. To read more please visit http://edex.northptso.org/goals
