  • Newton Post 440 Legion baseball coach hopes for grand finale
    Manny Connerney

This is the part of the job Newton Post 440 American Legion baseball coach Manny Connerney is not going to miss. After a half hour sitting in his car watching torrential rain drench Albemarle Park Monday night, the 73-year-old got out of his sedan and walked over to inspect the waterlogged field as thunder continued to rumble in the background. He quickly made the determination that there would be no baseball for his team on this night, and he would have to reschedule yet another game during what he has decided will be his final season as Post 440 coach.

  • Newton schools celebrate MIAA's reinstatement of boys gymnastics

The Newton South boys gymnastics team had already come back from the brink of extinction once in the past few years as the Lions broke free of a co-op program with Newton North, and survived a season when it had a single competitor, to build up to a squad that carried as many as 14 gymnasts. Last week, the Lions learned they’d survived another test of their nine lives when the MIAA reinstated the sport that was slated to be downgraded to club level for the 2013-14 season. By a vote of 13-0-1 the state’s governing high school athletic body reversed a decision from last year to effectively eliminate the sport.

  • Newton Post 440 Legion baseball team takes two this weekend

Newton North’s Brendan Ryan struck out 12 in a complete game on Friday and Newton South’s Dylan Russo struck out eight in a three-hitter on Saturday as the Newton Post 440 American Legion baseball team won a pair of games against Lexington and Ashland this weekend.
