Mission Statement
Our Mission here at Newton North High School, is to provide a variety of services in three major areas: academic, social/emotional, and college and career counseling. While students are the primary focus of these activities, school counselors and college counselors also work closely with parents, teachers and administrators.
We the Counselors work hard to support the needs of all students, who are comprised of a rich and diverse population. Our school-wide goal is to narrow the achievement gap between white students and students of color. Counselors play an essential role by providing a thoughtful and supportive approach and establish meaningful connections, while maintaining high expectations for all the students on their caseload.
Overview
Counselors spend the majority of time working directly with students. Through individual counseling and group guidance seminars, counselors address the developmental needs of students and provide crisis intervention. They are also in frequent communication with faculty, staff and parents/guardians in order to coordinate services and provide an optimum school experience for all students.
Counselors work closely with the Special Education Department, serving as referral agents and as members of evaluation teams. Counselors coordinate the 504 process and monitor the implementation of the 504 Accommodation plans. They also meet regularly with Deans and consult often with school psychologists and special education liaisons to share information and develop strategies to meet the specific needs of individual students.
